What’s your Career Story and how can I help?
Having qualified as a life and executive coach, I went on to train in career coaching and set up my coaching business engagelifecoaching.com in August 2018.
Since then, my clients have mostly been mid-careers, facing the same challenges that I faced in my career after 20 years.
When I ask them to describe how they feel about their careers in one word and I get words like:
Lost
Tired
Weary
Unsettled
Stressed
Overwhelmed
Does this sound like you?
It sure sounded like me a few years ago, and a few years before that too.
I also get phrases like:
Stuck in a rut
Need direction
Not sure if this is what I want to do
Something needs to change
This can’t go on
So, what do you do when you feel like this?
How would it feel if you were still in these same circumstances, feeling this same way in a year’s time? 5 years’ time?
What one thing, if you could change it, would make things better for you now?
How would you feel if you turned up for work tomorrow and the whole place had closed down?
The answers that you give to these questions are very telling. They are probably telling you that you can’t go on like this.
Something needs to change.
So, what’s stopping you?
My guess is that the biggie is fear.
Fear of change.
Fear of making the wrong decision.
Fear of regret.
Fear of giving up what you have.
Fear of what people will say.
Fear of failure.
Fear you won’t get another job.
Fear is motivating you to stay where you are. You’re frozen.
But also lost, tired, weary, unsettled, stressed, overwhelmed…
Stuck in a rut, needing direction, not sure if this is what you want to do, feeling that something needs to change, that this can’t go on…
So, how can you give yourself the confidence to make decisions to change? You must be sure in what you are deciding, sure that it’s right for you.
What helps us make decisions is our values. That is, what is important to us.
So, like I said in Part 1, what is important to you in a job?
What does a job have to give you?
Think about this. Write it down.
This will help you make your decisions confidently, so you won’t fear the change, but embrace it.
You won’t regret it but rejoice in it.
You won’t fear giving up what you had but look forward to what you can achieve.
You won’t fear what people will say but be able to state your decision to others confidently.
You won’t fear failure, but relish in the success to come.
You won’t fear job hunting but know that the right job is out there for you.
You will be motivated to make the change.
Free, not frozen.
